Psychoanalysis from the Couch to the Community

Psychoanalytic community-based intervention models were born out of a need to address secondary trauma and to work through personal and systemic resistances. While some believe that psychoanalysis belongs to the couch, this event presents the emergence of a psychoanalytically-informed approach to address homelessness, addiction and reentry from incarceration. The working model operates as a social container and relationship builder that results in a healing community.
Presenters:
Polly Hanson-Grodsky, MSW, LICSW has a special interest in fighting for economic and racial justice, advocating for systems change and maximizing human potential one person at a time. She is a Clinical and Marco social worker and has extensive clinical experience working with groups, families and individuals. She has been acknowledged for her integrity and strong work as a leader and team member through the 2010 Clinical and Support Options agency-wide Morale and Spirit Award while working in psychiatric crisis and as an outpatient clinician. For the past eight years Ms. Hanson has worked as an Adjunct Faculty member at Boston College School for Social Work, Smith College School for Social Work teaching Human Behavior in the Social Environment, Race and Racism in the United States and Social Policy for Children and Families. She has been also served as field faculty for Simmons University School for Social Work and Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis. In her role as Associate Director of Project Place she oversees and manages the clinical, research and case management responsibilities for a dynamic, innovative and growing non-profit agency. She is committed to furthering the mission of the agency into providing education, skills and hope to homeless and low income individuals seeking support toward financial independence through transitional employment and career development. Under her leadership, services for clients have grown and programming has deepened to attend to the complex challenges which confront those who are re-entering the community after incarceration, veterans who have served in the military, women in shelter with their children and clients who are experiencing homelessness and poverty.
Gabriele Perez-Gil, M.A. has extensive experience integrating psychotherapy and social community work. She has over twenty years collaboration with Pina Palmera, A.C., a community in Oaxaca, Mexico, working with the indigent population with disabilities. She has extensive teaching experience at conferences, universities and in the Mexican school system. She has specialized in addiction prevention, group desensitization and group skills development. Ms. Perez-Gil has worked as an in home therapist with Latino children and families in crisis and collaborated with Project Place working with incarcerated women. She has a private practice in Brookline and is a doctoral candidate at the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis.]
